January Best Seller is Forbidden Persuasion by Blair Warren

Blair Warren is not your typical persuasion guru. Far from it. He is a is a television producer, writer, marketing consultant and self described voracious student of human nature. His near-obsessive fascination with what makes us all tick led him to create an online course he called Forbidden Persuasion. This is not the typical watered-down academic treatise or regurgitated stuff of decades ago that we still see from time to time online. This is street smart persuasion boiled down to the essence of what works for real people. Even better, the price is a fraction of what the course sold for earlier and that is good news in this tough economy.

Forbidden Keys to Persuasion by Blair Warren is HOT, HOT, HOT

One of the interesting byproducts of the economic mess facing us today is a big uptick in interest in being more persuasive. It is a bit like going back to basics, sharpening the tools to do a better job or even to get a job. To say there has been an uptick in interest is a whale of an understatement.

Excerpts from The Forbidden Keys to Persuasion by Blair Warren

The truth is, everyone is a manipulator. Good people, bad people, young people, old people. None of us can escape this one. If we are going to survive, we are going to manipulate. Of course, no one likes to think of themselves this way. Sure, other people manipulate, but not me. I have good intentions. I would never do such a thing. Now, granted, some people won’t go out and do it intentionally, but don’t be misled. They’ll go out and manipulate just the same. You can count on it. Why? Because manipulation is a part of our very existence. We manipulate the environment, we manipulate people and we manipulate circumstances all in an effort to meet our needs and insure our survival.

The Achilles Heel of the Human Mind by Blair Warren

It is one thing to pay attention to something, it is quite another to have our attention captured by something. While in both cases, we may or may not voluntarily give our attention to the arresting stimulus, that is where the similarities end. When we pay attention, we maintain an awareness of our selves and therefore maintain control over the encounter. When our attention is captured, we lose all sense of our selves

P.P.S. In case you haven’t heard about him yet, Blair Warren is a television producer, writer, marketing consultant and self described “voracious student of human nature”. He’s been working in the field of television production and marketing for nearly 20 years, producing over 300 half-hour episodes and nearly 50 one-hour episodes of niche programming. Blair has also worked on countless commercials, promotional tapes and marketing campaigns for such clients as Diamond Shamrock, La Quinta Inns and Suites, The Cancer Therapy and Research Center, Pabst Blue Ribbon and Old Milwaukee Beer.

During a brief hiatus from television (92-94), Blair was a Programmer Analyst for Shell Oil, where he worked on high-level computer system designs as well as provided technical field support for some of their refineries onsite computer systems. He said, “While I loved the work, I soon found myself longing for the excitement, unpredictability and freedom that television had provided me, so I hung up my programmer hat and haven’ looked back”.

The move has allowed Blair to not only exercise his “creative side” but has given him ample time to pursue his near-obsessive fascination with human nature. On of the outcomes of his fascination was  The Forbidden Keys to Persuasion  as a six week e-class taught in 2003 and 2004 for as much as $1,950.  (Now it is available as an affordable e-book. Kubrick, Context and Persuasion by Blair Warren

One of the lessons in The Forbidden Keys to Persuasion focuses on the power of context. The reason is simple: context is one of the most overlooked aspects of communication. Especially persuasive communication. People often spend far more time and money honing the specifics of their message than they do contemplating the frame around their message. In other words, context gets lost in our effort to polish and perfect our messages. Yet, if the context itself is weak or confusing, all the detail work in the world will be for naught.

Cats, Kids, Cults and Katrina – A Lesson in Compliance by Blair Warren

I wanted to give to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. But I wanted to do so freely. The moment I was made to feel guilty and told I had to do more, I shut down. But the moment I was thanked for my previous efforts and assured that I didn’t have to do what I had already done, I wanted to do more. And I did. In our quest to gain compliance, we would be wise to remember that sometimes the best way to get people to do things is to remind them that they don’t have to.

As you may know, the impetus behind The Forbidden Keys to Persuasion material was as follows:Some cult leaders and con artists can convince people to do virtually anything while the masses struggle to persuade others in even the most trivial of matters. What do these people know that the masses do not? Well, I’ve been asked if I could summarize the answer in one sentence. I can. And I will.
